Northern Ireland Inspired Learning Day
I volunteer as a governor at Icknield Community College where I link with the humanities faculty. Recognising, from the school, that students struggled to engage with the Northern Ireland Controlled Assessment part of their GCSE History Curriculum, together with a friend (who volunteered for the Warrington-based Foundation for Peace) we put together a day where we demonstrated how having the right environment could support teaching and learning. Giving students badges that identified them with various factions, and seating them in an intentionally antagonistic way under the union and republican flags, when, after showing them original footage from before Bloody Sunday we gave them paper, telling them they were weapons, you can imagine the result. If you can't, there's a photograph below. All the resources we used during the day are published here.
